This episode Russ and I chat with Ben Lustig, Jake Thornton the writers of the Hulu original The Princess which was released last year exclusively on the streaming service. It’s been a favorite of mine since I first watched it and a film that I put on pretty regularly.
The R-rated action film stars the incredibly fun-to-watch Joey King (Bullet Train) in a “reverse The Raid.” King is a The Princess who is betrothed to marry an older, somewhat sleezy Dominic Cooper (Preacher) refuses to go through. This leads to a series of fights, flashbacks and falls as she takes on a small army of armored men to save herself and family.
It’s a truly fun popcorn movie that without drawing much attention to it is an empowering female led film. It didn’t get the attention it deserved when it was released but now thanks to a decision from the corporate overlords at Disney the film will be banished from existence - likely for a tax write-off. This came as a surprise - especially in the middle of an on-going writers strike. Disney is purging several big budget productions from its services in including the tv show Willow, Y: The Last Man and Black Beauty (2020).
Ben and Jake found out about their film being pulled the same way we all did - from a news article. We discuss all that, what got them into writing, the future of the movie business and much more in this episode of the Emerald City Video Podcast.
