Reverend Jesse Jackson at 82 was honored last week at the Democratic National Convention. Jackson, ran for President on the Democratic ticket twice in 1984 and in 88. He won neither, but confronted the party with the reality that the Black vote was their base and should not be forgotten. His connections with the party have always been contentious, many who were angry that he called out the leadership and dared to run.
The weekend before he was amongst a much more friendly crowd. The Nation Magazine held an event honoring the now wheelchair-bound Civil Rights leader. Rev. Jackson’s legacy was remembered as one that joined with Rev Martin Luther King Jr and never stopped fighting for voting rights, LGBTQ+, housing, and more. His "Rainbow Coalition" as he called it in '84 was on display at not only the Nation event but at the 2024 DNC.
